Περιγραφή

Limnos’ oldest church is located in Repanidi, Moudros, an excellent Byzantine architectural sample, with unique wooden carvings and murals. Dedicated to Agios Georgios, the old church in the center of the village has been nominated, as a preserved historical monument.

It is a Cemetery church, three-aisled Post- Byzantine basilica with neoclassical influences, without exonarthex and bell tower, the most characteristic sample for the ecclesiastical architecture of the Post-Byzantine period in Limnos.

According to the sources, it was founded in 1860, but the church already existed in the village in 1858 as evidenced by the descriptions of the traveler and archaeologist Alexander Conze. In 1928, a new church of Agios Georgios was built right next to the old one.

For the greatest good, the old temple did not undergo subsequent interventions such as other churches on the island. Thus has maintained, in their original form, the architectural elements, such as the simple facade, the coating with Maltegian stabs, the latticed wooden panels at the women’s gallery, the wooden carved, gilded temple of exquisite art, with floral columns at the parapets and intense colors.

The church closed for half a century, suffered severe damages and at some time was in danger of collapsing. Today, the temple is completely preserved by the local Archaeological Service, is a true masterpiece of ecclesiastical art and architecture.
